Mid Mon Valley Transit Authority is the July Member Spotlight. “The Chamber is recognizing their 42 years of continuous membership and the outstanding manner in which they serve and support this region,” said Deb Keefer, Chamber Director.
In the spring of 2007 the Mid Mon Valley Transit Authority (MMVTA) adopted an approach for change and improvement labeled “The New Mid Mon – moving in a new direction.”
Since implementation, the MMVTA has revamped fares to include improved payment options and discounted multi ride passes and a new student program, extended services on the Green Line route to the Belle Vernon area shopping plazas and introduced a new demo route to connect Valley residents to the Rostraver Route 51 area and to both Westmoreland County Community College campuses.
“The MMVTA has made some drastic steps forward in improving bus service to the Mon Valley,” said MMVTA Executive Director Valerie Kissell. “However, we have many more projects in the works which include an entire examination of all of our current routes and services that will lead to an overhaul and improvement of our bus routes to better serve the community.”
One of MMVTA largest changes will come on July 1 when First Transit takes over driver and maintenance services for the MMVTA.
“Our buses and routes will continue to run. The only change when First Transit takes over bus services for us will be that a new management team and company will be in place who will report to the MMVTA,” said Chairman of the Board Dr. Harry Miale.
A large majority of current contracted employees will be making the move to First Transit, and by late fall MMVTA’s first phase of the Donora Intermodal Transit and Maintenance Center may be ready for business.
The offices of the Mid Mon Valley Transit Authority are located at 1300 McKean Avenue in Charleroi. Also at this location is a modern passenger terminal and Park-N-Ride. MMVTA can be reached at 724-489-0880 or through their website at www.mmvta.com.
